Universities have played a key role in the process of economic growth, as both a source of new knowledge and a trainer of scientists and engineers who work in industrial laboratories. Around the world, countries have recognised that research universities are key to the knowledge economy of the 21st century and that they are crucial national assets. They promote the excellence in research and education by emphasising the mutual dependence of these activities at the highest levels of learning.
HEC aims to develop and sustain a dynamic and internationally competitive research sector in Pakistan that makes a major contribution to economic prosperity, national wellbeing and the expansion and dissemination of knowledge. Promotion of Research is one of the core strategic aims of HEC. Through the program and initiatives launched by HEC for strengthening research and the process of knowledge creation, the quality and research output emanating from the universities and institutes in the country have shown tremendous improvements and Pakistan has been acknowledged as rising star in a number of research disciplines in terms of percentage increase in internationally cited research publications. The University of Malakand in this regard has contributed a lot to this achievement, with 204 publications in international ISI-Indexed journals. Yet, this is no more than an end of a beginning and we need not only to sustain and improve this trend but also contemplate on questions of relevance and economic, social and academic impact of the research. In pursuit of this end, HEC started working to organize the research activities of universities/HEIs ensuring availability of well-established and fully functional ORIC (Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization).
ORIC was established at the University of Malakand on March 8, 2012 to provide strategic and operational support to the University’s research activities/program, and to have a central role in facilitating the University’s research outcomes.
The objective of the establishment of the Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) is to develop, expand, enhance and manage the university’s research programs and to link research activities directly to the educational, social and economic priorities of the university and its broader community. The ORIC is also responsible for assuring that the quality of research reflects the highest international standards and advances the stature of the university among the world’s best research institutions.
The importance of the entrepreneur and entrepreneurship in driving growth and maintaining and sustaining economic development is not a secret anymore. The backbone of American and European economies has always been innovation and entrepreneurship with the SME sector contributing more to the GDP than big corporations. In these countries, the twin engines of entrepreneurship and the knowledge economy have ushered in many radical innovations: new forms of technology—from IT to biotech—new patterns in society, new demands on the workplace, even new modes of living. Universities were instrumental in developing much of this radical innovation.
There is a need in Pakistan to focus on research that can contribute to the knowledge economy in terms of innovation and which can at the same time be commercialized. The focus on entrepreneurship will ensure that the University’s staff, research students and other students develop innovative ideas and transform them into viable business ventures with the support of the University. This will not only result in scientific development of the country and the university but will also allow the university to produce graduates who are job providers instead of job seekers. ORIC University of Malakand has been very active in this regard, and has been training and motivating students and faculty in coming up with innovative ideas which can be commercialized and on focusing on research that can make an impact on people’s live and the country’s economy.
