Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman Department of Physics, is now one of the distinguished researchers having an impact factor of more than 100. He is one of the leading physicists and materials scientists of Pakistan. He is one those limited distinguished Professors of the Nation who are equally known for their instructions, research as well as students administration.
As a researcher, Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad established new trends in physics research in Pakistan. He introduced the emerging field of computational materials science and organized three international workshops in Malakand University on the topic. He produced 6 Ph.D’s and 35 M.Phil’s with high standards and quality, who are serving as post docs and faculty members at different universities within the country and abroad. He has published more than 60 papers, since 2007, in high indexed peered review journals of the world with accumulative impact factor of about 100.
He has established Materials Modeling Center at the University of Malakand and Materials Modeling Laboratory at Hazara University. The purpose of the Center is to create a globally leading base for integrated multidisciplinary research for advanced technological applications, attract eminent scientists to the region and develop capacity in materials modeling, increase in the economic competitiveness of the country and enhance the standing of the university by quality teaching and research. The modeling and simulation of materials are based on the development of theories and computational methods, and ranges from the quantum physics of atomic-scale phenomenon to the continuum descriptions of macroscopic behavior.
As an academic leader he has revised the physics curriculum of Pakistan with global vision and also established Ph.D and M.Phil programs in physics at Hazara University and University of Malakand. Being a man of actions, he discouraged short cuts in academics in the form of notes and introduced textbooks for all courses. As a Provost of the University of Malakand he eradicated all the student political pressure groups and other unwanted elements which were constant threat for the peaceful environment of the University. While at the same time for the real professional growth of the student leadership he provided simple idea/structure of student professional societies.
As an instructor he received awards and letters of appreciation for his outstanding teaching at the University of Idaho (USA), Bay College Michigan (USA), HEC (Pakistan) and Louisiana State University (USA). Along with his instructional competency he proved his prime status in the physics community of Pakistan by chairing the meetings of the National Physics Curriculum Review Committee in 2011 and 2012.Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad was the last child of the first teacher and social worker of Upper Swat, Mawlawi Muhammad Saeed (Serai Ustad). He was born in 1969 in Matta, Swat and received his early education from the local government school and college. Later on he received his BSc degree from Jehan Zeb College, MSc in physics from the University of Peshawar, M.Phil in solid state physics from CSSP, University of the Punjab and Ph.D from the University of Idaho (USA). He has served in the leading universities of the world like Louisiana State University (USA), University of Idaho (USA) and University of Technology Malaysia.
